Our hearts are broken to announce the passing of our mom, Helen Mahoney-Stewart who passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at Bridgeview Hall on February 18, 2023 at the age of 86. Born in Sevogle, New Brunswick she was the daughter of the late Albert and Dorothy (Baisley) Estey.

Mom began her career as a teacher before finding her true calling as a nurse. While she stepped back from her role as a working nurse when she began to grow her family, she truly never stopped caring for all of those around her. Her calling was nursing, but her passion was her family. She loved nothing more than having a house full of people that she could spoil with a warm hug and a home-cooked meal. She never passed up the opportunity for a good game of cards or darts, the chance to attend a dance, and loved any opportunity to get “dolled up.” Her house was “home” to many and if you were really special, you won an invitation to her piece of paradise, the Shore. Mom had a huge heart and it showed in her community; she played an active role in the Islandview Seniors Club, the Lion’s Club, the Ladies’ Auxilliary Branch No. 90 and the Catholic’s Women’s league. Mom was never good with goodbyes, she often stood teary-eyed in her window and waved goodbye, so for now, it’s not goodbye, it’s see you later.

Helen is survived by three daughters: Cheryl Matheson (Jim), Debbie Mahoney, and Catherine Sullivan (Allen). Sister: Carmel Estey. Grandchildren: Michelle Jardine, Drew Matchett, Nicole Mahoney, Christopher Mahoney, John Matheson, Katie Matheson, Brittany Sullivan and Brooke Taylor. Great grandchildren: Spencer, Myah, Chloe, Hannah, Luke, Janelle, Bentley, Ava, Sage, Remy, Arlie and Londyn as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by her loving husband Clayton Mahoney after 36 years of marriage. She was fortunate enough to find love again with husband Merton Stewart, who also predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her son Clayton Mahoney and her son-in-law Jim Mahoney. Sisters: Marie Smith, Doreen Goguen, Bernadette Webb, Mary Estey, Mona Robbins, Theresa Freeman, Loretta Hedquist and Greta Innis. Brothers: Jim Estey, Morrisey Estey, Francis Estey, Harold Estey, Barry Estey, Edward Estey, Stirling Estey and Baby Estey.

Helen’s family extends their sincere thanks to Bridgeview Hall for their loving care and compassion.
